Can Mental Health Training Help Your Business?
We’ve all had those days when it feels like the weight of the world is on your shoulders. Trying to juggle career, family and life itself can sometimes feel overwhelming for anyone. However, it’s especially hard for those who have poor mental health. Did you know that depression is now the second leading cause of disability worldwide, behind lower back pain? It is also a major contributor to the suicide rate and heart disease.
When times are tough, it’s easy to become isolated from the people around you – friends, family and colleagues. Some people simply don’t want to talk about any difficulties they are experiencing. Maybe they feel their problems are nobody else’s business. They might be embarrassed or not want to appear unprofessional in a work environment.
This is when the smallest things can make the biggest difference. How many times have you asked “Would you like a cup of tea?” when someone is upset?
We spend the majority of our day in work, and how much a job affects personal wellbeing cannot be understated. I recently read a study from the Mental Health Foundation which found that 86% of people with a mental health condition believed that their job and being at work was important to
protecting and maintaining their mental health. This means that as employers, it’s up to us to find ways to help people do just that.
Many of those quoted in the study said that work had a positive influence on their recovery, wellbeing, self-esteem, social connectedness and identity; even when they identified that work-related stress was directly related to their problem, they said that being at work was a necessary part of their lives as it provides income, stability and, most importantly, routine.
Keeping this in mind, how can you recognise if one of your employees is struggling with mental health and put support in place to help them? We often pick up on signs that someone is having a tough time. But not everyone knows how to offer support or feels comfortable opening up to someone.
ELAS’s mental health first aid training course has been specifically designed to help all delegates spot the early signs of mental health issues, know what signs to look for, ways in which you can approach the subject with your employees, improve your listening skills and know what options are available to help support someone who is struggling with a mental health condition.
