Christmas Health & Safety Update
Christmas can be a period where we often think elf and safety has gone mad! There are extra hazards present during the festive season and as a business owner, you need to minimise the risks that these pose. Our Health & Safety Manager, Wayne Dunning, has put together his top tips for avoiding any elf and safety issues this Christmas.
Fairy Lights DO: Visually check the lighting strip for damage Check that cables in the plug are secure and not loose Check that fuses are the correct type (more information can be found on the packaging box) Replace bulbs if they blow Try to ensure your bulbs are LED DON’T: Leave fairy lights on when you’re asleep or out of the building Let bulbs touch anything that can burn easily, such as thin crepe paper or crackers Overload sockets Decorations DO: Keep decorations away from candles DON’T: Attach decorations near to lights or heaters Place decorations immediately above or around the fireplace Christmas Trees DO: Make sure you have a CO2 ‘Not Water’ extinguisher to hand if a Christmas tree should set on fire Make sure you have fire safety precautions in place if you are using a live Christmas tree. A burning tree can rapidly fill a room with fire and deadly gases Try to keep the live tree stand filled with water at all times Discard your tree promptly when it becomes dry Take your tree to a recycling centre or have it picked up by a community pickup service when disposing your tree DON’T: Place your tree close to a heat source, including a fire place or heat vent. The heat will dry the tree out, causing it to be easily ignited by heat, flames or sparks. Drop or flick cigarette ashes near the tree Put your live tree up too early or leave it for longer than two weeks Put tree branches or needles in a fireplace or wood burning stove.
